Earlier we brought you the pretty awesome footage of Neil Patrick Harris and Mike Tyson performing together as they stole the show at last night’s Tony Awards. The Tonys, now in their 67th year, celebrate success on the Broadway stage and this year it was the British shows that came out triumphant.
The big award of the night, best musical, went to ‘Kinky Boots’ which is a stage adaptation of the 2005 British comedy flick starring Joel Edgerton and Nick Frost. The production is yet to be seen in the UK but this high profile win is sure to start rumours of a West End transfer. Cyndi Lauper, who wrote the music, was awarded best original score and leading man Bill Porter picked up best actor in a musical.
The other big British success story of the evening was ‘Matilda’ which picked up four awards including best book of a musical. The show has only just opened on Broadway after massive success in London where it won seven Olivier Awards and shows no signs of slowing down. It is one of the shows hoping to bolster Broadway attendance after it was revealed takings fell in the 2012-2013 season for the first time in 5 years.
Other winners included the revival of ‘Who’s Afraid of Virigina Woolf’ which took away awards for best revival, best actor in a play and best director. Tom Hanks, who was up for best actor in a play for his Broadway debut in ‘Lucky Guy’ lost out to Woolf’s leading man Tracy Letts.
You can check out all the winners here but we’re off to re-watch Neil Patrick Harris stealing the show with his awesomeness.
