The creepiest things from horror films are often the masks. Stick a weird face on a poster and I get the chills all over. THE PURGE goes a step further by also giving us a tantaslising “What if?” scenario. In a not-too-distant-future, the government allows a 12 hour period once a year where you can do whatever you want, and that includes murder, rape and stealing, without having to face any consequences. Ethan Hawke follows his celebrated turn in horror success SINISTER, with this offering from the producers behind PARANORMAL ACTIVITY.
The idea is fantastic! I love films that explore society and ethics via exaggerated scenarios. It looks like a fierce mix of FUNNY GAMES and a more explicit TWILIGHT ZONE episode.
THE PURGE is released 31st May in the US, with a UK release date yet to be announced. It stars Ethan Hawke, Lena Heady, Edwin Hodge, Adelaide Kane, and Max Burkholder.

Luke likes many things, films and penguins being among them. He's loved films since the age of 9, when STARGATE and BATMAN FOREVER changed the landscape of modern cinema as we know it. His love of film extends to all aspects of his life, with trips abroad being planned around film locations and only buying products featured in Will Smith movies. His favourite films include SEVEN SAMURAI, PASSION OF JOAN OF ARC, IN BRUGES, LONE STAR, GODZILLA, and a thousand others.
