Beware! Potential spoilers lie ahead concerning THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 and Spider-Man comics in general. You’ve been warned.
It’s a fairly well-known plot point among the comic book crowd that Gwen Stacy, as played by Emma Stone in last year’s THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN, meets her untimely demise at the hands of Spidey’s nemesis, the Green Goblin. The death marked a historic moment for comic books, as for once a character who was killed off proved to stay dead. Even if it was only because the writers didn’t know what else to do with her.
And ever since the character cropped up in Marc Webb’s 2012 reboot of Sam Raimi’s original trilogy, the only question that has been on fans’ minds has, of course, been whether she would meet her comic book fate on-screen. At a press junket for her latest film GANGSTER SQUAD, Stone was asked this very question, but didn’t give us much to go on:
‘Will she? Is it up to you? Did you write the script? Did you ghost-write the script?’
Nevertheless, the young actress’ somewhat cynical response does offer more than it might seem. Where in previous interviews Stone has been happy to talk shop about kicking the on-screen bucket in future Spidey flicks, now she’s gone all coy on the matter. This could easily mean that the filmmakers have asked her to keep tight-lipped on the subject, perhaps due to the fact that it’s going to happen at some point.
That point will probably not be in the next film, as while Dane DeHaan’s casting as Norman Osborn points toward the Green Goblin as a future villain, the focal point of THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 has been confirmed as Jamie Foxx’s Electro. Still, a quick character swap didn’t stop Sam Raimi from giving nods towards the source: the original SPIDER-MAN film of 2002 saw the Green Goblin drop Mary-Jane Watson (Kirsten Dunst) and a tram car full of passengers off a bridge, mirroring the events that led to Stacy’s death in the 1970s.
And speaking of MJ, the fiery redhead will soon be showing up in Webb’s franchise as a minor character, played by Shailene Woodley. This could further signal the end of Gwen in THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 or 3, paving the way for Peter Parker and Mary-Jane to hook up in future films. This all depends, of course, on how close Webb wants to stick to the comics: but as we’ve seen in his first Spidey outing, he isn’t afraid to deviate somewhat from his source.
Of course, Stone’s dilly-dallying around the subject could also mean that it’s not going to happen at all, and that’s why she no longer wants to speak much about it. Or maybe she’s just being deliberately unhelpful to poor old Josh Horowitz of MTV, who prompted the actress about her character’s death. We’ll have to wait until next year to find out, as THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 hits screens on 2nd May, 2014.
Do you want to see Gwen Stacy killed off? Or should Marc Webb forget all that nonsense and let Peter and Gwen have a jolly old time beating up bad guys? While we at THN have a certain soft spot for Miss Stone (who doesn’t?), it’d be nice to see something as bold as a main character being killed off in a superhero film for once.
