I’ve always known it, but I recently stated in my THN HalloweenFest article on THE INNOCENTS (1961), just how creepy kids are. I know Guillermo Del Toro agrees with me at least. Producing or directing films such as THE DEVIL’S BACKBONE (2001), THE ORPHANAGE (2007) and now MAMA. MAMA is the feature length directorial debut of Andres Muschietti, and is an adaptation of their own 2008 short film. The story follows two young feral girls that have brought themselves up over the last five years. They are placed into the custody of their uncle and his wife, but wouldn’t you just know it, they’re either crazy or their is an evil force out to get them. Well, it was bound to be one or the other.
The trailer has some fantastic imagery, scary moments, and an atmosphere of everything is going to go to hell. I’m hoping for something darker and more disturbing than another recnt Guillermo Del Toro produced horror DON’T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK.
MAMA is released 18th January 2013 in the US. It stars Jessica Chastain, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Megan Charpentier, Isabelle Nelisse, and Daniel Kash.
