New Images Of Michael Douglas And Matt Damon In ‘Behind The Candelabra’

by Craig Hunter

BEHIND THE CANDELABRA has been Steven Soderbergh’s passion project for over a decade. As time passed and financing struggled, it seemed the project would be stuck in development hell forever. While it won’t be seen on the big-screen, the real-life story of the flamboyant entertainer Liberace finally found a home – and a backer in HBO. We’ll eventually get to see the film as it chronicles Liberace’s turbulent life with the much younger Scott Thorston, as well as his subsequent death from Aids in 1987, aged 67.

Below we have some more behind-the-scenes images of Michael Douglas as the lead pianist/singer and Matt Damon, who portrays his gay lover Thorston. Douglas appears to capture the uncanny image of the late legend with the aid of costumes and make-up, while the style of the 70s setting is evident in Damon’s hairstyle. BEHIND THE CANDELABRA is based on the same-titled biography by Thorston and will air early next year. Rob Lowe, Dan Ackroyd, Debbie Reynolds and Scott Bakula also co-star.

If you’re wondering who the guy is pictured alongside both men, his name is Frederic Prinz von Anhalt and is the husband of Zsar Zsar Gabor. The film is currently using the couples mansion as the extravagant location to shoot interior scenes.

Be my Maestro, Lee,
Passion more seen, soul more heard,
Play Liberace,
Piano’s rosetta stone,
Maestro music is that way.

Shirtless Matt adore,
Twirl your bike helmet for bull,
Whirl your red silk shirt,
Poolside by moonlight, ballet,
Lee key-dance Malaguena.
