Twentieth Century Fox and Blue Sky Animation bring us a trailer for their new film, EPIC. The story focuses on a war in the forest between tiny little people. Chris Wedge takes up directing duties after an eight-year absence since ROBOTS (2005).
The trailer doesn’t give us too much to go on, other than a little guy running around and some stunning visuals. The sun bursting through the trees onto an army of hummingbirds is a particular delight. Based on a 40-page children’s picture book titled ‘The Leaf Men’ by William Joyce – this wreaks of Hollywood’s incessant need to extend and adapt everything in sight. Though in saying that, Joyce himself has been very involved in CGI animation for quite some time.
It all looks so familiar to me that I can’t say I really care for this at all. It definitely has a huge debt to pay to FERNGULLY: THE LAST RAINFOREST (1992). No doubt there will be an eco-friendly message which will also draw parallels to AVATAR (2009). The humour seems broad from the little there was and the characters all seem to be loud and sassy, which is the only way Blue Sky Animation seem to be able to write their characters.
EPIC is released 24th May 2013. It stars the vocal talents of Colin Farrell, Amanda Seyfried, Josh Hutcherson, Beyonce Knowles, and Johnny Knoxville.

Luke likes many things, films and penguins being among them. He's loved films since the age of 9, when STARGATE and BATMAN FOREVER changed the landscape of modern cinema as we know it. His love of film extends to all aspects of his life, with trips abroad being planned around film locations and only buying products featured in Will Smith movies. His favourite films include SEVEN SAMURAI, PASSION OF JOAN OF ARC, IN BRUGES, LONE STAR, GODZILLA, and a thousand others.
