Charlie Kaufman To Write HBO Series For Catherine Keener

BEING JOHN MALKOVICH scribe Charlie Kaufman is to direct long-time collaborator Catherine Keener in a half-hour comedy series for HBO.

The actress has worked with Kaufman on aforementioned BEING JOHN MALKOVICH, directorial debut SYNECDOCHE, NEW YORK and upcoming musical FRANK OR FRANCIS, as well as appearing briefly as herself in ADAPTATION. Keener is also known for working closely with director Nicole Holofcener in films such as FRIENDS WITH MONEY and PLEASE GIVE.

Keener will produce the series which is set to be written and directed by Kaufman. It is described as ‘an exploration of one day in a woman’s life and how the events leading up to it can affect, or not, the reality in which she lives.’

I’m not going to pretend to know what that means exactly, but with Kaufman at the helm I’m not surprised. It’s thought that HBO are keen to fast-track the project and add the writer/director to their roster of established writing talent. HBO is home to Larry David’s CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM, Armando Iannucci’s VEEP and Lena Dunham’s GIRLS (which is excellent, you should watch it.)

It’s unclear how this project will affect FRANK OR FRANCIS, a musical comedy starring Jack Black, Steve Carrell, Kate Winslet and Catherine Keener. There’s also recently announced CHAOS WALKING to consider; an adaptation of the teen novel trilogy. There’s also the long rumoured Joaquin Phoenix-led drama about political figures leading a New World Order. Whatever comes first, it’s clear that Kaufman will be working non-stop throughout 2012, and 2013. Probably 2014 too.
