Because you simply can’t have too much of a good thing, PUSHING DAISIES’ Bryan Fuller is considering a new TV adaptation of STAR TREK. The sequel to JJ Abrams’ 2009 hit film is currently scheduled for 2013, but Fuller is interested in taking the franchise back to the small screen where it started. At the moment, this seems little more than an idea Fuller is kicking around with USUAL SUSPECTS director Bryan Singer, but the idea does have some potential. With its fun cast, Beastie Boys-having soundtrack and boisterous energy, Abrams’ franchise reboot made a Star Trek installment that was not just for trekkies. Nerds and jocks alike pulled up a seat to watch Kirk and co zip around at warp speed and lock horns with Eric Bana. If this same accessibility could be brought to TV, Fuller could have a huge hit on his hands.
Of course, the elephant in the (control) room (of the Enterprise) is JJ Abrams and his potentially ever-expanding film franchise. If Star Trek 2 is as big a hit as its predecessor, a keen businessman like JJ is unlikely to stop there. Star Trek has a pretty deep bench of supporting characters and paths down which the story could go. Once Chris Pine gets tired of the captain’s chair, a casting call could easily be sent out to find the next sonorous bald man to bring a Shakespearean touch of class to the role of Jean Luc Picard. Fuller is no fool, and acknowledges that Gene Roddenberry’s property is “wisely under J.J. Abrams’ purview of what happens. He’s the guardian of Trek right now”. So for all the enthusiasm in the world, this project could easily be kiboshed by one shake of Abrams’ big rich head.
