As a sub-genre, the gangster film has given the industry some of the most memorable movies – even right back in the early years, when we we’re given the likes of James Gagney in WHITE HEAT. Meanwhile, the 197os gave us Coppola’s THE GODFATHER double. Modern classics included, Pacino’s grandstand turn as Tony Montana in SCARFACE, and of course GOODFELLAS. Martin Scorsese’s epic crime saga spanned several decades, following the rise and ultimately fall of Henry Hill who, for as long as he could remember, always wanted to be a gangster.
Now American network AMC is working with Nicolas Pileggi, the author of the book on which the film was based, along with original producer Irwin Winkler, to bring a television series based on the 1990 film. The film, starring Robert De Niro and Ray Liotta, was nominated for six Academy Awards but only received one for Joe Pesci’s unforgettably chilling turn as psychopath and ‘funny guy’ Tommy DeVito.
AMC are fast becoming a network to rival HBO, giving us acclaimed series such as BREAKING BAD, MAD MEN, THE WALKING DEAD and THE KILLING. So what do think of a series based the gangster classic?

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
