Miles Davis Biopic In The Works

A biopic of legendary jazz trumpeter Miles Davis seems finally to be on its way. The idea of a Davis film has been floating around for a long time, with Don Cheadle in particular clamouring to get the ball rolling. He is indeed almost the ideal candidate for the biopic treatment; a true innovator, Davis played a large role in the development of jazz, whilst fighting with drug addiction, amongst other personal problems. The upcoming film, currently working with the title MILES, will be directed by George Tillman, Jr, the man behind NOTORIOUS, another biopic of a legendary musician.

Miles Davis is one of those artists that most people have heard of but only a select few are really familiar with. Despite this, producer Nick Raynes is hoping for a RAY or WALK THE LINE sized crossover hit: ‘Our intention is to make a feature film that will appeal beyond the worldwide audience of Miles Davis die-hard fans, to also include those who don’t know the first thing about the man, and introduce new ears to his music’. The upshot of that ambition is that the film may not tell the whole story; though Davis’ talent was undeniable, he could be difficult, to say the least. But the production has an ace up its sleeve in Gregory Davis, son of Miles, who says ‘George Tillman and Nick Raynes will tell the true story of my father – without any sugar-coating’.
