Sony Picks Up Movie Rights For Assassin’s Creed

Fans of Ubisoft’s acclaimed video game series ASSASSIN’S CREED are sure to either rejoice or lament the news that Sony has acquired the movie rights for the series. No word yet on who exactly will helm this production, or whether it will come out any time in the near future, but the wheel is certainly turning for an adaptation to eventually grace cinema screens. Both Ubisoft and Sony are not strangers to video game adaptations: Ubisoft’s own PRINCE OF PERSIA series was recently adapted by Disney, and Sony is already planning adaptations of in-house video game series UNCHARTED and INFAMOUS.

French game developer Ubisoft recently set up Ubisoft Motion Pictures, dedicated to finding partners such as Sony Pictures to develop adaptation of their various lucrative video game properties, whilst retaining some measure of creative control with the projects themselves. A spokeswoman for the company said: “Ubisoft is actively looking for film opportunities for our top brands. There is high interest from top Hollywood studios to collaborate on these brands.” Indeed, head of Ubisoft Yves Guillemot stated at this year’s Gamescom that he is hoping to eventually see adaptations of ASSASSIN’S CREED, TOM CLANCY’S SPLINTER CELL and TOM CLANCY’S GHOST RECON.

The fourth instalment of the ASSASSIN’S CREED series, ASSASSIN’S CREED: REVELATIONS, will be released by Ubisoft on November 15th.
