TANGLED, Disney’s 3-D animated adventure based on the Rapunzel story, has finally worked it’s own magic on a certain broomsticked boy wizard to grab the top spot in the US Daily Box Office rankings.
The film rang up an estimated $5 million in US and Canadian dollars on Friday whilst HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS registered $4.8 million; which suggests a similar one-two rankings over this weekend as the Disney picture should draw better audiences than POTTER because of Saturday and Sunday Matinee performances.
The first part of the final HARRY POTTER film bested the Disney film in it’s first weekend and currently boasts £232.3 million in cumulative domestic box office at the start of it’s third session whilst TANGLED totes an estimated $80.1 million through 10 days of general release.
The weekend’s only new wide release — Relativity’s martial arts Western THE WARRIORS WAY bowed way down in ninth place with just $1 million from its first day in theaters. This suggests itmay struggle even to reach middle single-digit millions through Sunday. Sony Screen Gem’s BURLESQUE and Fox’s rom-com LOVE AND OTHER DRUGS each took £2 million Friday to end in a tie for third place as they move in to their second sessions. FASTER fetched $1.2 million in eighth place.
In a notable platform launch, early signs show a big first weekend in limited release for Fox Searchlight’s Natalie Portman starrer BLACK SWAN. The suspense thriller collected $425,872 from just 18 theaters in eight markets in its first day in theaters on Friday.
