The Empire Strikes Back director Irvin Kershner dies at 87

I can’t believe the news today. First we hear of Hollywood legend Leslie Nielsen‘s passing and now we learn of the death of Irvin Kershner. The director, whose credits include THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK, ROBOCOP 2, NEVER SAY NEVER AGAIN and S*P*Y*S, passed away at the age of 87 in California.

Kershner started his career in photography and music, before making his debut in film with documentaries in the 1950’s. His huge break was the 1980 film THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK, the second and arguably the best of the entire STAR WARS saga.

Kershner’s exact cause of death has not yet been reported, but sources say he was battling a long bout of illness.
