Opening in New York on the 29th of October, WASTE LAND is a documentary set in the Jardim Gramacho, what is also known to many as the largest trash site in the world. The documentary, which was screened last week at the BFI London Film Festival, follows the journey of New York artist, Vik Muniz, as he travels from his home in Brooklyn to the garbage dump on the outskirts of Rio De Janeiro. There, he meets an amazing group of people called “catadores”, or self-designated recyclable materials pickers, who he tries to help and connect with through the power of art. Directed by Lucy Walker, this astonishing film has been wowing the crowds on the festival circuit, and winning a whole bunch of snazzy awards. Set to an inspired soundtrack created by Moby, this film documents the lives of these incredible people and their emotionally compelling stories.
