We reported at the tail end of last week that Tony Gilroy is to tackle the fourth film in the Bourne series for Universal, THE BOURNE LEGACY. What wasn’t clear was Matt Damon‘s involvement in the film. Well, we can reveal that Mr. Damon’s involvement in the film will be…. zero. Yes, Gilroy himself was interviewed by Jeffrey Wells for Hollywood Elsewhere over the past few days, and spilled the beans that neither Damon, or even his character Jason Bourne, will be in the next film…
Gilroy was quoted in saying: “This is not a reboot or a recast or a prequel. No one’s replacing Matt Damon. There will be a whole new hero, a whole new chapter…this is a stand-alone project.”
“The easiest way to think of it is an expansion or a reveal. Jason Bourne will not be in this film, but he’s very much alive. What happened in the first three films is the trigger for what happens. I’m building a legend and an environment and a wider conspiracy…the world we’re making enhances and advances and invites Jason Bourne’s return [down the road].” Gilroy added.
So, hang on. Does that leave the door open for Bourne to return sometime in the future? What do we think?
