Judge Dredd Becomes Simply Dredd… And Gets A Synopsis

As you all may have heard, a new Judge Dredd movie is being planned for cinema screens sometime in the near future, and up until now we hadn’t heard a great deal of detail regarding it. Well, now we can give you a mini-update as we’ve heard via /Film that the flick will be simply titled ‘Dredd’, dropping the ‘Judge’ and more of its association with the classic 2000 A.D. title’s other movie incarding from the 1990’s starring Sylvester Stallone.

One of the studios that are making the film, IM Global, also updated us with a brief synopsis for the movie.

DREDD takes us to the wild streets of Mega City One, the lone oasis of quasi-civilization on Cursed Earth. Judge Dredd (Karl Urban) is the most feared of elite Street Judges, with the power to enforce the law, sentence offenders and execute them on the spot – if necessary. The endlessly inventive mind of writer Alex Garland and the frenetic vision of director Peter Travis bring DREDD to life as a futuristic neo-noir action film that returns the celebrated character to the dark, visceral incarnation from John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra’s revered comic strip.
So, what else do we know of the film? Well, it’s going to a hard-R, Karl Urban will play the title character and Olivia Thirlby wil co-star. Pete Travis (Vantage Point) directs.
