James Cameron’s Avatar, a film that we are still yet to see here at THN Towers, is the biggest film everywhere this Christmas after bagging a huge $75 million in extra takings at the US box-office over the Christmas weekend.
The film has managed to take the huge number, while Sherlock Holmes, Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel and It’s Complicated all enjoyed strong openings at the number two and number three spots respectively. Jason Reitman’s Up In The Air made up the top five at position five with $11.8m in takings.
It has been a record-breaking weekend in cinema going terms in the US and Canada, with the $278m (£174m) in weekend ticket sales breaking the previous record of $253m (£158m) set in July 2008, the weekend The Dark Knight was released.
