It may come as no surprise that Thor: Ragnarok took a shit-ton of money at cinemas across the North American territories this past weekend. The film opening in the U.K. two weeks ago, but U.S. audiences were finally treated to Taika Waititi’s glorious bona fide blockbuster on Friday, and it seems that they headed to multiplexes up and down the country in their droves. Thor Ragnarok US Box-Office: Latest Marvel Adventure Hammers Home $121 Million

Thor: Ragnarok, Marvel Studios’ 17th feature film rocketed to a $121 million domestic take from 4,080 theaters. That easily secured it the number one spot in the U.S. top ten, the studio’s 17th consecutive No. 1 Marvel Cinematic Universe. The franchise has now taken over $5 billion at the domestic box-office since Iron Man debuted over ten years ago (and a huge $13 billion globally).

The Thor Ragnarok US box-office haul means that the movie, the third in the stand-alone series featuring the God Of Thunder, has taken $427 million around the world since it first opened. That’s a whopping 41% increase over the $85.7 million that 2013’s Thor: The Dark World tool, and an 84% increase over the $65.7 million debut of its first instalment, 2011’s Thor. It also means that Marvel have three of the top five openers of 2017, a list that includes Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2, which opened back in April, and this summer’s Spider-Man: Homecoming. Disney must be popping open the champagne bottles as I type this.

Thor: Ragnarok has been met with mainly positive reviews. The film sees Chris Hemsworth return as the title character, joined by franchise returnees Tom Hiddleston and Mark Ruffalo. Newcomers include Tessa Thompson, Cate Blanchett and a hilarious Jeff Goldblum as Grandmaster. Karl Urban, Sir Anthony Hopkins and Idris Elba round out the main cast.
