Joss Whedon Batgirl news: The director says he may go with an unknown actress for the superhero part in his new film.
Joss Whedon turned up at the world premiere of Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 last night where he caught up with the world’s press. The Avengers and Avengers: Age Of Ultron director will slip across to DC for his next big superhero film, Batgirl. More on the Joss Whedon Batgirl news below.
Of course, the press had a lot to ask Whedon about his next film, which is currently in the writing stage, and who may play the title character. Here’s what he had to say to to Variety.
“I have so many things to say about her, I’m very excited to see a girl in the cowl. [Casting wise] I don’t have my eye on anybody. I’m creating this character, I’m in a dialogue with her and then we’ll see who joins that later on… I doubt it’ll be a name. I think this is somewhere where you go and find Batgirl and then you cast her. I’m not against movie stars, they’re great, but you need somebody who’s going to be just right, and a situation like this the name carries a lot of weight, so it’s not as critical.”
Batgirl was last seen on screen in the George Clooney Caped Crusader movie Batman and Robin. Alicia Silverstone played the part in that movie, but it sounds like Whedon will choose an unknown for his new movie. He has a lot of source material history to go through as Batgirl first appeared in Batman #139 in April 1961. In Joss we trust to do a great job, which we’re sure that he will.
We’re guessing that Batgirl is a while off yet though, and of course DC and Warner Bros. have a ton of stand-alone movies and Justice League films to come before then. Another comic book heroine, Wonder Woman, is up next. That one hits cinemas in July.
