We reported just a couple of days ago that any future Terminator movies had been put on permanent hold, but that may not be the case after all. The latest film in the series, Terminator Genysis, failed to set the US box-office on fire, and made just about $90 million in its domestic territory, but the Arnold Schwarzenegger starrer did do quite well overseas, and made an additional $350 million, including a strong debut in China.
Speaking with TheWrap, Skydance Media Chief Creative Officer Dana Goldberg recently discussed the future of Terminator series, and things sound more positive as she denied that the planned sequels were now on hold.
“I wouldn’t say on hold, so much as re-adjusting.”
Re-adjusting plans? The next film was due for release in 2017, so has that date been shelved? Are they looking for a new direction?
Goldberg continued…
“Happily, we live in the world where the domestic number [doesn’t have the] level of importance [it did] 10 or 15 years ago — I’m not saying it’s not important, it is — but we have to play to a worldwide market, in terms of ‘Terminator,’ the worldwide market paid attention, but we’re not taking the domestic number lightly.”
Goldberg added that Skydance, who produced the film, said that the company will use “data and research to do a worldwide study and really talk to audiences about what they loved, and what maybe didn’t work for them, so that the next step we take with the franchise is the right one.”
Let us help with that. Less CGI, or better CGI if you must use it, maybe more Arnie, lose the Matt Smith character, start a fresh with a new film with no ties to what has come before and more new ideas. Oh, and more J.K. Simmons too – the guy was wasted in the last movie.
More news as it comes in.
