Aside from opening a can of worms that would keep Chris Packham busy for a week, the Sony hacking incident has claimed its first scalp in terms of a movie release. Action thriller THE THROWAWAYS stars James Caan and Sam Huntington, the latter of which plays a super hacker who is forced to work for the CIA. Huntington then turns the tables on his employers by hiring the fag end of the agency talent pool – the so-called “Throwaways” of the title. It was due to be released by Crackle, the online production arm of Sony Pictures Television, but recent events have led to the Dec 19th premiere being pulled. Though the studio is looking to get it out in January – “when they hope things calm down” – this is fairly unlikely given the current bonfire of the vanities fuelled by private e-mails circulated thus far. Promotional materials for the film are absent for the time being.
The attack is widely believed to be a retaliation against controversial Kim Jong-un-based comedy THE INTERVIEW, which ironically has gone on to receive poor reviews. Executive-produced by Jeremy Renner, written by Michael Ross and directed by Tony Bui, THE THROWAWAYS also stars Kevin Dillon, Noel Clarke and Merlin‘s Katie McGrath. Time will tell if the production is decent enough to weather the cyber storm.
