Kristen Stewart takes the lead in CAMP X-RAY, a film in which she plays a soldier who has joined the army to escape her small town roots. In doing so, she becomes a guard at Guantanamo Bay and strikes up a friendship with a detainee. The film sounds very familiar to PRISONER OF WAR or BOYS OF ABU GHRAIB (as it was known in the US), although the plot device of having a captor befriend a captive isn’t exactly something new. What may add an extra layer to the conflict is Stewart attempting to make it in a man’s world.
The poster plays on Stewart’s star power, while doing the obvious Photoshop tactic of blending her body into another image. Not trying to draw any conclusions from the poster, but is it suggesting Stewart’s character is bigger than all this or that it is a part of her? The title certainly alludes to her being able to see through what’s on the outside. This is the feature length directorial debut of Peter Sattler, a man who has worked as a graphic designer on films such as WALK THE LINE, BLACK SNAKE MOAN, and STAR TREK.
CAMP X-RAY will show at the London Film Festival on 9th October, and is released in the US on 17th October. It stars Kristen Stewart, Peyman Moaadi, Tara Holt, Lane Garrison, John Carroll Lynch, and Julie Duffy.
