In an exclusive with Variety magazine, the news comes suddenly that actor Chris Evans, most recently known for his role as Captain America in the Marvel universe, is ready to leave acting behind in pursuit of a career as a director. Worry not though, Marvel fans, he wants to give his six film contract everything he’s got before he hangs up the shield.
“If I’m acting at all, it’s going to be under Marvel contract, or I’m going to be directing,” he says. “I can’t see myself pursuing acting strictly outside of what I’m contractually obligated to do.”
Evans’ six-picture deal with Marvel is in the process of nearing completion, with CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER being his newest addition. With CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER and THE AVENGERS under his belt already, with the additions of CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER and AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON, Evans will only have two films left, which will presumably be CAPTAIN AMERICA 3 and AVENGERS 3. So when asked when he’ll finally be passing on the mantle of the Cap, if at all, he said the following:
“That’s a good question. We can do this out loud. (‘Avengers 2’) will shoot till August. I wouldn’t be surprised if for all of 2015, we didn’t do a movie. I bet by 2017, I’ll be done.”
His roles have varied far and wide, from his first recognisable role in NOT ANOTHER TEEN MOVIE, the start of his superhero career as Johnny Storm in FANTASTIC FOUR, to the star-spangled poster-boy turned bad-ass in CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER. He laments that nobody ever sees his “good little movies, man” such as PUNCTURE, or SUNSHINE, both of which are greatly shadowed by his performance in SNOWPIERCER.
Evans, who will be missed as an actor, no doubt, especially after you see his newest Marvel film, spent his winter break on his directorial debut, “1:30 TRAIN.” It is essentially a love story that focuses on a young woman (Alice Eve) who misses her ride home at Grand Central Terminal and subsequently spends the night talking to a street musician (played by Evans).
“I’ve known for a while I wanted to direct,” Evans says. “But (time) never really opens up. There’s another movie to do, there’s another acting job. It just got to a point where I was like, you know what — I have to do this.”
But Evans makes a point of saying that:
“For all I know, in five years, I might say, ‘Shit, I miss acting.’ Right now, I just want to get behind the camera and make movies.”
Good luck, Chris. We’re all eager to see what you’ve got to offer us. Does this mean Captain America will be replaced in THE AVENGERS? What story arcs could unfold? Civil War? Let us know what you think of this news in the comments section below.
