Scott Kalvert, the director behind THE BASKETBALL DIARIES, has died aged 49.
Kalvert started his career directing music videos, with Cyndi Lauper, Marky Mark (Mark Wahlberg), DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince himself Will Smith listed as a handful of his clients. Moving on, but staying within the music genre, he directed the Guns N’ Roses concert video Live At The Ritz in 1988, shortly followed by THE BASKETBALL DIARIES in 1995. Based on Jim Carroll’s memoir People Who Died, the film helped launch the career of the then-teenage Leonardo DiCaprio.
The Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office are investigating his death as a suicide. No other details have been released.
Our thoughts are with Kalvert’s family at this sad time.

Considering Jazmine grew up watching CARRY ON SCREAMING, THE LION KING and JURASSIC PARK on repeat for weeks on end, it made sense for her to study film at London South Bank University. It’s also a good thing that her course requires a lot of sitting down because she’s very accident-prone. When she’s not examining her bruises, she likes pretending that she doesn’t live in Southend-On-Sea and spends hours mindlessly blogging. Favourite films include BLUE VALENTINE, ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND and TOY STORY 2.
