Adam Driver Announced As Villain For ‘Star Wars: Episode VII’

Here we are, then: almost a year and a half since STAR WARS: EPISODE VII was announced, and we finally have our first solid casting announcement, courtesy of Variety. Girls star Adam Driver, whose name you’ll have seen being bandied about for the role of Nightwing in the upcoming BATMAN VS SUPERMAN, is apparently ready to sign on for the primary villain role in J.J. Abrams’ sci-fi sequel.

Driver is now Disney and Lucasfilm’s top choice for the new trilogy’s main villain, a character which will be in the vein of the original trilogy’s Darth Vader. So, we can expect a villain which will span EPISODE VII, VIII and IX; a deduction supported by the fact that Driver’s casting would have happened much sooner had he not been signed on for future series of Girls, suggesting Disney want him for future instalments past EPISODE VII.

Driver has impressed in recent films including the sublime INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS, so this is a promising casting choice. It’ll be interesting to see exactly what form his character takes – human, alien, machine or something else entirely – but we’ll hopefully find out more details when Disney makes an official announcement, which is expected to be in the next few days.

STAR WARS: EPISODE VII is due for release on 18th December, 2015.
