Fincher’s ‘Gone Girl’ Gets Drastic Change & Creepy Mag Image

Director David Fincher’s latest descent into the dark depths of mankind is an adaptation of the best-selling novel GONE GIRL by Gillian Flynn. The film, which arrives in cinemas on the 3rd October, also has a screenplay from the author herself. However, Fincher’s been taking about the changes she’s made to the final third act to that of the book’s unforgettable conclusion.

“There was something thrilling about taking this piece of work that I’d spent about two years painstakingly putting together with all its eight million LEGO pieces and take a hammer to it and bash it apart and reassemble it into a movie… Ben [Affleck] was so shocked by it. He would say, ‘This is a whole new third act! She literally threw that third act out and started from scratch.”

On the casting of current Hollywood golden boy Affleck, the SEVEN and ZODIAC director added:

“Ben knows inherently what that experience is like. He knows what it’s like to be hunted. You have to wonder if Nick did horrible things to his wife, and you have to see him do some really not good things, but at the same time you have to able to say, ‘I’d like to have a beer with that guy.”

And of that of Rosamund Pike as the missing Mrs. Amy Dunne:

“Falling in love with Amy is like a chemical high injected right into your veins. And that needle can inject something toxic as well. [Playing] Amy gives you a sense of feeling completely uncaged. As an actress, I had a sense there are no rules about what a woman has to be.”

We’ve included the creepy new magazine image taken by Fincher himself featuring the two leads just below the official plot synopsis:

On a warm summer morning in Missouri, it is Nick and Amy’s fifth wedding anniversary. Presents are being wrapped and reservations are being made when Nick Dunne’s beautiful wife disappears from their rented mansion on the Mississippi River. Under mounting pressure from the police and the media — as well as Amy’s parents — Nick distributes a series of lies, deceits, and inappropriate behavior. But is he really a killer?

As the cops close in, every couple in town is soon wondering how well they know the one that they love. With his twin sister Margo at his side, Nick stands by his innocence. Trouble is, if Nick didn’t do it, where is that beautiful wife?

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
