Initially planned as a formulaic concert doc about Riot Grrrl founder Kathleen Hanna, THE PUNK SINGER, has become a much grittier, more personal and much more artful endeavour. The focus now much more on the musician and her life’s work. The new age feminist icon and lead singer of ‘Bikini Kill’ and ‘Le Tigre’ apparently found the prospect a “…terrifying idea.” at first.
Told through archival footage, and interviews with Kathleen’s close friends such as Joan Jett and Hanna’s husband ‘The Beastie Boys’ Adam Horovitz. Directed by Sini Anderson the singers long time friend, the film examines the positive effects of the Riot Grrrl movement over the last two decades. As well looking at the singers struggle with lyme disease and how this affected her approach to art.
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly Anderson said, “I thought it was a really good time for people to know not just about Le Tigre, but about her story.”
And know we shall, THE PUNK SINGER will be in theatres on Nov. 29, Check out the official poster below..
