The new screenplay DEPRAVITY from Dennis Lehane has landed itself a lead actress; SMASH and AMERICAN IDOL alumni Katharine McPhee. Hits such as SHUTTER ISLAND, GONE BABY GONE and MYSTIC RIVER have also been penned by Lehane so expect a high quality thriller here with Paul Tamasy, who directed THE FIGHTER, also on board.
Katharine McPhee, fresh off the cancellation of the NBC musical ratings disaster SMASH, came to audiences’ attention in 2006 after finishing runner up on the talent juggernaut AMERICAN IDOL; back when their viewing figures were still through the roof.
After a 3 year stint as a pop star McPhee turned to acting and landed one of the lead roles in the doomed SMASH which followed a group of characters attempting to stage a Broadway musical based around the life of Marilyn Monroe. Despite strong pilot ratings and positive reviews from the critics the show never regained the high quality of the very first episode and was cancelled after its second season – the finale of which was broadcast in the U.S this week.
The only information we have about the plot of DEPRAVITY at present is this –
‘A group of roommates accidentally kill an innocent man they thought was a thrill killer. It sends the group into a world unhinged from any moral compass, one in which they may be forced to confront not only the evil around them but the evil within them as well.’
McPhee will star as “a twentysomething the group tries to scapegoat”.
This is a major step up for the actress who, before SMASH, has only had minor film parts in movies including SHARK NIGHT 3D and THE HOUSE BUNNY. No word yet on whether this role will include those famous pipes of hers.
