With the year’s superhero shenanigans almost done and dusted, it’ll soon be time for altogether different kind of hero – Aaron Cross, the latest agent to go rogue and prove a pain in the CIA’s ample arse. Taking over from titular character Jason Bourne (Matt Damon), Cross finds himself at odds with Treadstone, the black ops outfit that just can’t seem to keep control of their deadly agents.
Rumours were recently circulating that Bourne may return for the fifth installment (if it happens) to team up with Cross. Either way, it seems Aaron Cross will continue kicking arse and taking names, as producer Frank Marshall confirmed at a recent press conference:
‘We’re gonna follow Jeremy’s character. Everything else is wide open. That’s the great thing about this now. The table is set to go any direction we want to. But we will, I’m sure, follow Jeremy and see what happens. Jeremy and Rachel [Weisz].’
New leading man Jeremy Renner also gave his two-pence worth on where he thinks the franchise is heading:
‘As far as the future, I’m excited that the architects and the creators behind this whole thing have cleverly left it wide open for fans like myself to wonder what’s going to go on next.’
All that unhelpful vagueness aside, let’s not get ahead of ourselves – before we worry about part five, there’s THE BOURNE LEGACY to get stuck into. The big question is whether the franchise can succeed without Matt Damon, who brought a human element to the slick and brutal preceding films. Fortunately, original BOURNE screenwriter Tony Gilroy is on board as director, so the fourth installment should at least share the vision and tone of the previous three films.

THE BOURNE LEGACY co-stars Rachel Weisz, Edward Norton, David Strathairn, Albert Finney, Joan Allen and Donna Murphy. It arrives in UK cinemas 13th August.
