The latest Superman effort MAN OF STEEL, has its composer confirmed and it’s none other than the current THE DARK KNIGHT RISES composer, Hans Zimmer. MAN OF STEEL is the first Superman movie since SUPERMAN RETURNS (2006). For that film John Ottman composed the score, but was heavily influenced by, and even riffed on John Williams’ memorable theme from the 1970’s.
Next year’s MAN OF STEEL is distancing itself from those classics as much as it can, so in that respect Hans Zimmer certainly seems like the correct man for the job. After all, I didn’t believe a Batman film could be made without Danny Elfman’s iconic theme from BATMAN (1989), but I was proven very wrong. Zimmer may not churn out those memorable tunes, but he certainly captures the correct atmosphere.
My only current concern is that Warner Brothers are trying far too hard to capture the magic of Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy. They already have Nolan as producer, David S. Goyer as writer, and now Hans Zimmer scoring. For a company that doesn’t seem to be connecting these two franchises, they are certainly doing everything they can to recreate a successful recipe.
MAN OF STEEL is directed by Zack Snyder and stars Henry Cavill, Russell Crowe, Kevin Costner, Diane Lane, Amy Adams, Michael Shannon and Laurence Fishburne. It will be released on 14th June 2013.
