Check out this all-new image of Angelina Jolie as one of Disney’s greatest ever villains – Maleficent from 1959’s SLEEPING BEAUTY. The film… erm, MALEFICENT, goes back to the character’s past and examines the events that led her to being such a cold hearted bitch… sorry, witch.
In the original animated movie. Maleficent places a deathly curse on the princess Aurora, causing her to fall asleep for donkey’s years until the arrival of true love’s kiss. We’ve all been there.
Jolie follows Julia Roberts and Charlize Theron, both of whom have played fairytale witches this year. But whilst both MIRROR MIRROR and SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMEN fell foul of the critics, MALEFICENT has some sturdy talent behind it, particularly its director Robert Stromberg (who makes his directorial debut, but has nabbed two Oscars for his production design on AVATAR and ALICE AND WONDERLAND). It was also written by Linda Woolverton, who penned other Disney classics THE LION KING and BEAUTY AND THE BEAST. Let’s hope this one does the fairy tale justice…
