Next summer will see the re-release of two major 90s blockbusters in the form of INDEPENDENCE DAY and JURASSIC PARK but…in 3D. It’s been a while since ’96 and Will Smith really started to make an impact on the big screen back then and, although not as prolific, he still seems to be standing up well. INDEPENDENCE DAY 3D has the hallmarks of old school, summer escapism and success with that format of film has hit the 1 billion mark this year with THE AVENGERS. Sure, it’s not going to be exactly up-to-date wise but it knows what it is and so does the audience. There are rumours that it’s a subtle trial to see if Fox would take on a sequel but in honesty…what’s the point? Not that this usually stops a studio…
Another up for the conversation is the truly excellent JURASSIC PARK. Steven Spielberg’s masterpiece isn’t just being thrown into the 3D mixer though, oh no, producer and long-term friend Kathleen Kennedy is very keen to get this one right:
“I’m not a huge proponent of post-conversion, but I think if the filmmaker gets intricately involved in the post-conversion—it’s not just a technological exercise—then I think it can be really, really good and I think Jurassic Park is a perfect example of a movie that could work really, really well as a 3D picture…I also think it’s tricky because unless you framed the movie with [3D] in mind, not all those shots—quick cutting, that kind of thing—it’s not necessarily going to translate, and so that’s why you’ve gotta have the DP and you’ve gotta have the director frame-by-frame involved in the process of that conversion.”
Spielberg, director of photography Janusz Kaminski (or Dean Cundey) and Kennedy would all be involved in going through the process properly. I, for one, would love to see this back up on the big screen and if they can get it right with the 3D, it will still be just as tense and immersive. In the meantime, we’ve got a great behind-the-scenes of the T-Rex video from the Stan Winston Studios and the original trailer for Independence Day. Right here:
JURASSIC PARK 3D is set for release on July 19th 2013, and INDEPENDENCE DAY 3D on July 3rd 2013.
