With the end of the HARRY POTTER series, upcoming final film in the TWILIGHT series, and recent success of THE HUNGER GAMES, it’s no surprise to see movie studios searching for a new teen-sensation to turn into a hit film franchise. Sony are hoping to do just that with the recently acquired rights to THE CHAOS WALKING trilogy. The really interesting part of this story is the studio have hired none other than Charlie Kaufman to adapt the screenplay…
Kaufman, writer of BEING JOHN MALKOVICH, ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND and ADAPTATION, will write the screenplay for the first installment entitled THE KNIFE OF NEVER LETTING GO. The story focuses on dystopian, Earth-like world. After an alien species unleash a virus called ‘The Noise’ that enables all humans to hear people’s thoughts, it pushes the society to the brink of war.
This won’t be the first time Kaufman has taken inspiration from a book as the aforementioned ADAPTATION was based around THE ORCHID THIEF and became so much more (Nicolas Cage played Kaufman attempting to adapt the story). Though the ‘young adult’ angle may confuse Kaufman fans about his choice of project, he’s no stranger to the strange.
