From The Killing To A Killing Machine: Kinnaman Offered Robocop

It appears MGM has offered the lead role in their ROBOCOP reboot/remake to Joel Kinnaman. The actor has done sterling work on the US version of hit crime-thriller series THE KILLING. He is being lined up to take over Peter Weller’s iconic performance of doomed Detroit Officer Alex Murphy in Paul Verhoeven’s 1987 violent, futuristic classic.

The Swedish-born Kinnaman has recently been seen in David Fincher’s THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO and unfortunately the dismal sci-fi flop, THE DARKEST HOUR. He can also currently, be seen in Denzel Washington’s lastest action hit SAFE HOUSE.

ELITE SQUAD director Jose Padhila is helming the new ROBOCOP update, with Padhila promising to give the film a different and unique feel, rather than a straight-up rehash of the original. It was rumoured the studio were looking at the likes of Russell Crowe and Michael Fassbender, with the director going so far to say Fassbender was his first choice. Keep an eye out on THN for confirmation and any further casting announcements.

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
