Weekend box-office time Stateside!!! While Hollywood was out and about in the London rain last night, the box-office numbers were rolling in and indeed were very favourable towards the Martin Scorsese directed and Leonardo DiCaprio starring adaptation of the Dennis Lehane novel Shutter Island. The film banked an impressive $40.2 million from 2,991 theaters, averaging $13,440 per site. This is the best ever for a Scorsese/ DiCaprio collaboration (their other flicks are Gangs of New York, The Aviator and The Departed). Some sources state that the film is Scorsese’s biggest opener ever, which I would agree with, but also state that it is DiCaprio’s biggest opener ever, but didn’t he share the lead in a little nineties movie named Titanic? Anyway, bar that it’s his biggest opener ever with the previous record holder being 2002’s Catch Me If You Can.
Elsewhere this week, Valentine’s Day (last week’s number one) dropped over 60% in business with $17.1 million in takings over the three days, which is still quite impressive. James Cameron‘s Avatar actually went up a spot to number three this week with another $16.1 million in the bank (this is its 10th weekend out there), bringing its North American cume to $687.8 million.
Warner Brothers’ Percy Jackson and the Olympian’s: The Lightning Thief, made $15.3 million in its second weekend, dropping one spot to four and The Wolfman bagged another $9.8 million taking its haul to just $58.8 million total — the film actually cost $150 million to make.
So here’s the top ten movies in full. Look out for new entries from Kevin Smith (Copout) and horror redo The Crazies on next week’s chart.
