Trekkies around the world are desperate to see just where J.J. Abrams’ STAR TREK sequel, STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS, will take the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise. However, a lot more is being made of just who Kirk, Spock and all will be up against, with the villain being played by Brit Benedict Cumberbatch.
Most were expecting the iconic Khan (previously played by Ricardo Montalban in the best film in the franchise thus far), as the ‘baddie’ for the new adventure set in the far reaches of space. Earlier this year, many also brushed off Karl Urban’s ‘Gary Mitchell’ slip-up, pretty much straight way as a ‘misdirection’. However, the recent image that surfaced not long after the first impressive trailer came with the name ‘John Harrison’ tagged as Cumberbatch.
However, some are not so sure and believe Paramount Pictures are aiming to put fans off the scent! Here is what Cumberbatch has had to say in a recent interview:
I play John Harrison who’s a terrorist and an extraordinary character in his own right. He’s somebody who is not your two-dimensional cookie cutter villain. He’s got an extraordinary purpose, and I hope that at one point or other in the film you might even sympathise with the reasons he’s doing what he’s doing — not necessarily the means and the destruction he causes. But it was a great ride, not just because he’s the bad guy and the antagonist but also because he has a purpose and it’s hard not to see his point of view at certain points.
Do we believe him? The news that Alice Eve new character’s unveiling as Dr. Carol Marcus has done nothing but fire the flames as she is known to have ties to Khan in the original STAR TREK sequel. We’re not convinced Benedict…
STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS will beam into cinemas 17th May 2013 and co-stars Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Simon Pegg, Zoe Saldana, Anton Yelchin and Noel Clarke.

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.

Why not?
Why can’t we have an original villain?
They’ve gone to the trouble of creating a whole new Trek universe to play with. I’m not sure I want it cluttered up with more old characters.
