An adaptation of 1993 novel THE GIVER has been in the works more or less since 1994, and it seems like the project is a little closer to happening with the announcement that Phillip Noyce (SALT, THE QUIET AMERICAN, THE BONE COLLECTOR) is in talks to take the helm. Jeff Bridges has been attached to star for over a year (it was Bridges who bought the rights for the book two decades ago with his late father Lloyd in mind to star) and he will play the title role of ‘The Giver’ who is an important member of a future dystopian society. The plot outline goes as follow:
‘The Giver’ is a largely introspective fantasy tale set in a colorless dystopian society in which all memory of human history has been erased, emotion does not exist and citizens’ professions are chosen for them. When a 12-year-old boy is assigned to serve as the Receiver of Memories (i.e. the next Giver) he discovers that all is not as it seems.
It sounds like it could be an interesting project and Jeff Bridges has chosen his roles very wisely over the past few years, so I’m positive about it. As for Philip Noyce, I don’t think his films are as bad as some people do, and with the right script it could be really good.
