Surely everyone likes a bit of Dustin Hoffman, so his directorial debut has been anticipated with intrigue. The man who I first encountered as the tremendous HOOK, has had quite the acting career and as he moves behind the camera for QUARTET, what can we expect? First up, he’s enlisted the best of British talent with Maggie Smith, Tom Courtenay, Michael Gambon, Pauline Collins, Billy Connolly and a big screen addition for GAVIN AND STACEY’s Sheridan Smith.
Although this may be marketed to an older audience, I also think Hoffman will bring in the crowds of all ages. QUARTET is a comedy-drama based in a home for retired opera singers and focuses on the story of Reggie (Courtenay), Wilf (Connolly) and Cissy (Collins) who live there. Each year they stage a concert to celebrate Verdi’s birthday but when Reggie’s ex-wife Jean (Smith) arrives, she creates a whole lot of tension as plays the diva and refuses to sing in the concert. Check out the trailer:
