Oldman To Get All Smiley Again For Tinker Tailor Sequel?

Proudly sitting at the top of the UK box office, Gary Oldman’s amazing turn as old- school spy George Smiley may just turn into a major franchise if Oldman and distributors StudioCanal get their way. John Le Carre’s iconic creation, first brought to life by Sir Alec Guiness, could be set to carry on past the latest big-screen version of  TINKER, TAILOR, SOLDIER, SPY.

Speaking to The Guardian’s Jason Solomans, Oldman reiterated the fact that he loved playing the character and depending on box-office business would not have any qualms portraying Smiley again. The actor also insisted if he was to enter back into the shady world of the MI6 ‘circus’ , Swedish director Tomas Alfredson (LET THE RIGHT ONE IN) would also have take the reins again.

George Smiley appears in a total of eight of John Le Carre’s novels. Sir Alec Guiness followed up the BBC dramatisation of TINKER, TAILOR, SOLIDER, SPY in 1979 with SMILEY’S PEOPLE in 1982.

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
