Mel Gibson has revealed, via The Hollywood Reporter, that he is to direct a follow-up to The Passion Of The Christ, with his Braveheart scribe Randall Wallace writing the screenplay.
The film will tell the story of the resurrection of Jesus, and will be a sequel to the 2004 hit, which became the most successful independent film of all time.
“I always wanted to tell this story,” Wallace told the trade. “The Passion is the beginning and there’s a lot more story to tell.”
The resurrection was told in a film titled Risen, which was released by Sony Pictures earlier this year. While that film only took $46 million worldwide, Gibsons 2004 biblical epic grossed over $600 million from a $30 million budget.
The trade goes on to say that there is no financing in place for the sequel as yet, but there are a number of financiers already looking to back the project,
More as we get it.
