Not content with revisiting his greatest ever film (yes, the one with the Alien) with PROMETHEUS, Ridley Scott is allegedly revisiting his second greatest film, BLADE RUNNER. As reported by Deadline, Scott will produce and direct the film alongside Alcon entertainment, though there are no details on whether it will be a sequel or prequel. Whatever next? GI JANE 2, perhaps. The 1982 original was a seminal piece of science fiction, and was based on Phillip K. Dick’s ‘Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?’. A further installment would require new material to be written and it is unclear if the story would focus on original protagonist Rick Deckard (and would this involve Harrison Ford returning?).
BLADE RUNNER follows Deckard, who hunts down fugitive robots, or ‘replicants’, in a dystopian 2019 Los angeles. Eventually he falls for one of the replicants, and attempts to protect her from extermination. Much speculation ahs been made over the years as to whether Deckard is a replicant himself – an issue not helped by Scott’s relentless re-editing of the film, resulting in multiple versions, some of which point to the truth about Deckard. Would a sequel/prequel finally resolve the issue?
Scott’s PROMETHEUS arrives in cinemas 8th June 2012.
