We’ve known for a while that Pixar’s next movie was going to be called INSIDE OUT, but details have been a closely-guarded secret till now. Taking place in the brain of an 11 year old girl named Riley, we meet the inhabitants of Headquarters, who each represent an emotion – there is Joy, Fear, Anger, Disgust and Sadness (see pictured). The upheaval of a family move brings chaos at mental mission control, with what is sure to be a lot of internal bickering and inevitable reconciliation. Bringing the emotions to life vocally will be Amy Poehler (Parks and Recreation) as Joy and Bill Hader as Fear. For me Hader will forever be associated with the line “Welcome to the goodie room,” from TROPIC THUNDER and he and Poehler should generate a few sparks. Rounding off the voice talent are Mindy Kaling (The Mindy Project), Lewis Black (The Daily Show) and Phyllis Smith (The Office USA) as Disgust, Anger and Sadness.
It’s one of those simple but imaginative concepts for which the studio is renowned, though that’s never a guarantee of success with a company that isn’t afraid to stick its CGI extremities on the block. Despite being perhaps the most recognized animation brand in the world, they’ve had stumbling blocks but always go with their gut. CARS was never the most rapturously-received of franchises, though it hasn’t stopped them going ahead with a third instalment. This time however the TOY STORY team appear to be pushing all the right buttons.
Directed by Pete Docter (UP), INSIDE OUT will be released on June 19th, 2015. Or is that your mind playing tricks on you…?
