It was no surprise when Disney announced a sequel to the somewhat unexpectedly gargantuan box office hit ALICE IN WONDERLAND. With over a billion dollars under its belt, the film is one of Disney’s most lucrative productions of all time alongside THE AVENGERS, TOY STORY 3 and pretty much every entry in the PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN series. Last year it was officially announced that the sequel tentatively titled THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS will be released on 27th May 2016.
Now it has been revealed that Sacha Baron Cohen is in ‘early talks’ to play the villain of the film, although the character he will play is unknown. Cohen certainly seems like a good fit for the Disney franchise as the BORAT star definitely has more than one eccentric role in his filmography. Having him as the films villain would also work well against Johnny Depp’s ‘Mad Hatter’ who will be returning alongside Mia Wasikowska’s Alice.
The film will be directed by James Bobin (THE MUPPETS, MUPPETS MOST WANTED) but with the release date almost two and a half years away filming isn’t likely to get started for some time, so any casting announcements will probably come later rather than sooner.
