While not perfect, Universal Pictures’ surprising sleeper smash THE PURGE had a terrific concept and posed some nail-biting dilemmas to a near future-set United States. Director James DeMonaco’s survival thriller, a low-budget collaboration between Universal, Blumhouse Productions and Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes, amazingly made its $3 million budget back in less than a day as Ethan Hawke and family fought off sadistic teenage home-invaders. An opening weekend of $34 million before going on to a make close to $100 million worldwide.
That success assured a sequel would follow rather swiftly and DeMonaco was coaxed back to pen the follow-up and return to the directors chair. We now have confirmation of the full cast, some of which we’d previously known, as well as the official title of the film (that we hope is just a working title). THE NEXT CHAPTER OF THE PURGE (yes, really!) is currently shooting with a main cast consisting of Frank Grillo, Michael Kenneth Williams, Carmen Ejogo, Zach Gilford, Kiele Sanchez and Keith Stanfield. It’s set for cinemas on the 20th June, 2014.

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
