In the current YA world of adaptions, that’s sure to become drowned in offerings, next up for the big screen fling is Laini Taylor’s DAUGHTER OF SMOKE & BONE. Although this could be one quick to dismiss, the book has a lot of plaudits across the globe for its truly original nature in content, so before you sigh in a hope we won’t have another TWILIGHT, I think we could lean towards THE HUNGER GAMES but something that particularly interests me is the comparisons to a PAN’S LABYRINTH vibe, so here’s what to expect:
In general, Karou has managed to keep her two lives in balance. On the one hand, she’s a seventeen-year-old art student in Prague; on the other, errand-girl to a monstrous creature who is the closest thing she has to family. Raised half in our world, half in ‘Elsewhere’, she has never understood Brimstone’s dark work – buying teeth from hunters and murderers – nor how she came into his keeping. She is a secret even to herself, plagued by the sensation that she isn’t whole.
Now the doors to Elsewhere are closing, and Karou must choose between the safety of her human life and the dangers of a war-ravaged world that may hold the answers she has always sought.
The man set to take on the task is director Michael Gracey, who’s currently working with Tom Hardy on Elton John’s ROCKETMAN biopic, so he’s definitely a man of the moment.
It’s definitely early days for this one but with Universal behind it and COLLATERAL’s Stuart Beattie originally penning the screenplay (with re-writes from Laini Taylor), we’ll be keeping an eye out for upcoming news.
