Finally, Warner Bros. Pictures has debuted the Joker 2 trailer – to be specific, the Joker: Folie à Deux teaser trailer, unveiled at CinemaCon in Las Vegas and presented to the world online for your viewing pleasure. The film stars Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga in a sequel laced with music and performance; what looks to be another triumph for director Todd Phillips. It will open later this year.
What I found most surprising in this trailer, though, is the presence of one of the UK’s greatest comedic exports; one Steve Coogan who appears in a few frames part-way through. As far as I know, this is news to us and hasn’t been mentioned anywhere before.
There isn’t an official synopsis for Joker: Folie à Deux as yet but, judging by this first look, it looks like Joker and Gaga’s Harley Quinn are locked up together and form an alliance before breaking free?
There are definitely musical elements to this but it seems director Phillips played down the musical theme to the film at CinemaCon in Vegas yesterday.
Entertainment Weekly reports that Phillips said thr following about the musical comments: “We never really talked about it like that, but I like to say it’s a film where music is an essential element. To me, that doesn’t veer too far from the first film.”
He continued:
“Arthur [Fleck]’s weird and aloof and all these things, but he has music in him. He has a grace to him. That informed a lot of the dancing in the first film… it didn’t feel like that big of a step here. It’s different, but I think it’ll make sense when you see it.”
The first Joker was released in 2019 and made over $1 billion at the global box-office. It was a huge hit for Warner Brothers.
Joker: Folie à Deux will be released in cinemas on October 4.
