Deadline is reporting that Cillian Murphy, Oppenheimer star and winner of the most recent Best Actor Oscar is lining up an adaptation of the book “Blood Runs Coal: The Yablonski Murders and the Battle for the United Mine Workers of America.” A Blood Runs Coal movie will also see Murphy produce.

The planned work is set to be written by Jez Butterworth and John-Henry Butterworth, adapted from Mark A. Bradley’s novel. The project is set up at Universal Pictures who were also behind Christopher Nolan’s juggernaut, Oppenheimer. The story is set in 1960s Pennsylvania.

The trade says that the book tells the epic story of a corrupt union leader who murders a rival and is taken down by the lawyer son of the slain coal miner.

Murphy’s outstanding work can still be seen in Oppenheimer which is still riding high in the home markets, while a new film, Ireland-set Small Things Like These, is set to hit cinemas in the near future after opening this year’s Berlinale back in February. There are also rumblings of a Peaky Blinders movie with Steven Knight reportedly set for later this year with Murphy reprising his role as Tommy Shelby from the hit series.

There is also the small matter of 28 Years Later, a new film in the zombie franchise with Danny Boyle and Alex Garland. Murphy appeared in the very first movie in that series, 28 Days Later, and is rumoured to be starring in the new film as well as executive producing. The film is just the first part of a series of new features in the zombie franchise.
