The upcoming family movie Wonka premiered at London’s Royal Festival Hall in the city last night and with it came the first reactions.

It looks like the word is largely good for the film, directed by Paddington‘s Paul King and released by Warner Brothers. Huge praise seems to be coming lead Timothée Chalamet with critic Germain Lussier saying on X: “Timothée Chalamet is reason alone to see #WonkaMovie. He’s infinitely charming & a blast to watch.”

Elsewhere, The Telegraph’s critic Robbie Collin had the following to say of the film: “Well! Wonka is Paddington-level funny and adorable; less a Dahl prequel than a Goon Show caper with show tunes that just happens to tie up with the book. Ten-year-old turned to me after the central dance number with wide eyes and whispered “that was BRILLIANT”.

Simon Thompson said: “While Paul King’s #Wonka doesn’t quite reach the charming and beguiling heights of the Paddington movies, it is still a delightfully sweet treat. Timothée Chalamet’s titular dandy is endearing and fun while Hugh Grant’s Oompa-Loompa steals every scene he is in.”

In fact, I have so far struggled to find a bad word about the film. It sounds like we’re in for an absolute sweet treat come next weekend.

Based on the extraordinary character at the centre of “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”, Roald Dahl’s most iconic children’s book and one of the best-selling children’s books of all time, Wonka tells the wondrous story of how the world’s greatest inventor, magician and chocolate-maker became the beloved Willy Wonka we know today.

The film will released in cinemas in the UK from 8th December.
