Alexandre O. Philippe’s The Taking has got itself a trailer after first premiering on the festival circuit towards the end of last year. A feature documentary, the film examines Monument Valley which is on the Utah/ Arizona state line, and its representation on film and TV etc. throughout the years.
I missed this one on the festival run – it played Sitges, Fantastic Fest, and the BFI London Film Festival – but so pleased it is getting a release. It actually debuts in the U.S. next week (5th May) with a release in cinemas set. No word on the UK from what I can see as yet though.
The Film Stage premiered the trailer and included some comments from Philippe about his film and the subject matter. “Even though I have a little fun with John Ford, this intent is also not to trash John Ford. The intent is not to trash the function of myth. Myth is important, and the idea, as false as it may be, of this false narrative about the American west, still carries a lot of values that I can relate to,” he said of the film. “The crux of it is that we talk a lot about cancel culture these days, and that bugs me a lot. I would like us to be in more of a context culture.”
The iconic Monument Valley has been seen/ used in everything from the John Ford movies to Forrest Gump.
I’m looking forward to this one.
