“Mystery, Alaska” (1999)
Speaking of real story movies and underdogs, “Mystery, Alaska” gives us both in one package. A hockey team from Dawson City in the Yukon Territory traveled to Ottawa in the early 1900s to compete against the Silver Seven, the reigning champions.
The New York Rangers visit the fictional little town of Mystery in the film to play the residents. The feisty Alaskans are defeated by the Rangers just barely. In reality, Dawson City suffered a cumulative loss of 32-4 to Ottawa in two games. The allure of film!
“Downhill Racer” (1969)
Due to the accident of another skier, Dave Chappellet (Robert Redford) is given the final position on the American Olympic team. However, his coach, Gene Hackman, finds the gifted star to be quite the hassle.
Chappellet, a confident and courageous competitor on the slopes, is focused on defeating his German adversary for the gold medal.
Though the story has been told countless times before, what makes Downhill Racer so amazing is the way it is filmed. The majority of the ski scenes are shown in first person, which gives the action the impression that we are there on the slopes.
Similar to GoPro before GoPro was ever a concept, it was released in 1969.
“Men With Brooms” (2002)
This one is for all those hipster sports enthusiasts out there who are a little too cool to admit it.
The plot of the film centers on four friends who attempt to win a curling championship in memory of their late mentor, despite the title of the film possibly being a little deceptive.
Men with Brooms is a comedy that everyone should watch for a good chuckle, even though it’s a romantic comedy and it’s about a sport that none of us really follow.
“Iron Will” (1994)
Iron Will proved to be different from most of the grade school movies I was required to see because they were so dull.
Most people don’t generally give a damn about the Iditarod or dog sledding in general, but seeing Disney take on the sport and erroneously make it an Olympic event for theatrical purposes makes this movie one with amazing drama.
“Miracle” (1980)
I won’t go so far as to suggest that anyone who says they don’t like this movie is being a horrible American, but I would say that if you were to say those words to prove you are truly red, white, and blue, drinking a case of Bud heavy would be beneficial.
It would make for an interesting plot to put a group of unproven collegiate players up against the USSR, which generally has the upper hand.
Fans’ realization that this is a recreation of genuine events heightens the drama beyond what it would have been in 1980.
“Snowboard Academy” (1997)
Although snowboarding has been around for a long time, it was once a fresh craze that was gaining popularity because of events like the Winter X Games. Now that it has gained legitimacy, it is featured in the Olympics and produces celebrities like Shaun White and Chloe Kim.
But in 1997, while it was still very new, “Snowboard Academy” was one of its first films. Ernest, played by Jim Varney, and Corey Haim stars. That might sum it up.
“Sky Party” (1965)
Do you remember all those bizarre 1960s surf flicks? Those are excellent summer movies. Winter ought to join in the fun, too. Introducing “Ski Party.” One of the stars is Frankie Avalon, a mainstay of beach party flicks. James Brown sings a tune. Even if not everyone is a fantastic skier, there is a lot of skiing. It’s at least fairly enjoyable.
“Goon” (2011)
Off the record, fighting in hockey is on the decline, but “Goon” is still a respectable sports comedy despite this. Seann William Scott plays a former bouncer who now plays hockey and whose only talent is to hurl punches. Despite whether or not you enjoy hockey fights, it is a touch bawdy but not excessive, and the tale is compelling.
